Stories
Meet Hoot!
Yes, these photos were taken just months apart after Hoot’s arrival.
Hoot was our first intake to arrive in such an emaciated condition. He was surrendered to us at 25 years old with a body condition score of 1. He was extremely dehydrated, had severely neglected feet, an abscess, shrunken eye, an injured leg, and multiple skin infections. To be honest, we weren’t sure he would pull through—but we gave him every chance possible to fight, and boy, did he.
This gentleman was every bit of a Hoot! He went on to make a full recovery. In no time at all, he was running the place, making us laugh, and flirting with the ladies. This old man was a force to be reckoned with—whether he was swimming in the pond or trying to jump over a wheelbarrow to escape and cause a little chaos, he always seemed to have a new trick up his sleeve to keep us on our toes.
Hoot came in with another horse, Oscar, who also made a wonderful recovery right along side him. These to were the best of buds, they would nap with there backs together almost every day. The two soaked up retirement and the good life here with us until they both passed in 2025 due to old age. Hoot & Oscars memory remains a strong influence in the work we do. So thanks for giving a Hoot about us too!
Meet Gerladine!
Geraldine came to us in 2023 through our owner surrender program, along with two other mares. She is a BLM mustang who, unfortunately, spent several years in confinement after being gathered. When she arrived, she was completely unhandled, aggressive, dysregulated, and had severely neglected feet.
However, we understood the negative impact that going directly from living in the wild to long-term confinement—especially with little to no human interaction—can have on a horse. With that in mind, we committed to giving her the best possible chance at a better life moving forward.
Over the next year, Geraldine was given the time she needed to decompress, learn how to simply be a horse again, and begin her training and rehabilitation. After a few months, we started to see a shift. She went from charging and reacting frantically when approached to quietly waiting at the gate to be haltered.
Near the end of her first year with us, Geraldine’s future adopter came into the picture. She spent the following year getting to know her—and trust me, there is a lot to know. Geraldine has a big personality. If she were human, she’d be the life of any party… though truthfully, she is her own party—and yes, that can be both a good and a challenging thing.
Throughout that second year, we slowly and thoughtfully brought Geraldine under saddle, with her new mama heavily involved every step of the way. Once we felt she was ready, she officially went home with her adopter.
I’m happy to end this story by sharing that Geraldine has adjusted wonderfully to her new life.
